Safety & Financial Security
Our Commitment To Your Safety
When selecting your tour operator you need to be sure that it is reputable and provides you the protection you require.
The safety of our groups is the single most important responsibility we have and Key Stage Travel is committed to providing our groups with the highest possible safety standards at all times.
We operate a comprehensive Safety Management System, in line with DfES guidelines, which is annually inspected and approved by a suitably qualified external body.
We are also fully approved members of the School Travel Forum.
DfES Guidelines
The DfES guidelines relating to Health and Safety on Educational Visits state:
- Schools should ask tour operators for a copy of their safety management system.
- A safety management system should state clearly how a tour operator manages safety for all the elements of the visit they will be providing.
- The tour operator should also provide details of independent checks made by appropriate external organisations on their safety management system.
For more details and precise wording see the DfES Guidelines.
Safety Management System
In view of the DfES guidelines, we are delighted to advise you that we operate a comprehensive Safety Management System.
This was developed in conjunction with a number of expert bodies, including:
- RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents)
- Overcoat - safety experts within the travel industry
- School Travel Forum - a group of leading school tour operators with a commitment to safety in school travel
We are committed to:
- Ensuring, as far as possible, the safety of the tours we offer
- Making safety checks on all the elements of the tour we provide, including accommodation and coach operators
- Providing 24 hour emergency assistance while travelling
- Providing advice and assistance with risk assessments
- Providing pre-tour safety information and inspection visits
Our Safety Management System continues to reassure LEAs, teachers and parents alike.
Rigorous External Inspection Standards
Our compliance to our commitments is audited annually, in line with HSG65 standards, by a suitably qualified external body, which currently is Overcoat, the UK's leading travel safety specialist organisation.
Key Stage Travel is a full member of the School Travel Forum (STF).
The STF is a group of leading school tour operators who promote good practice and safety in school travel.
All full members of the STF adhere to a rigorous Code of Practice and Safety Management Standards which meet the requirements of the DfES guidelines and are externally verified each year by suitably qualified independent Health and Safety professionals.
During the course of developing the STF Code of Practice, and in addition to liaising with the DfES, advice has been sought from all leading education Unions and Associations. The STF initiative has the support of the SHA, NAHT,ATL, PAT and is welcomed by the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel. The principles on which it is based have the support of the NUT and the NASUWT advises members wishing to organise school trips to use companies that have this type of scheme.
Details of the School Travel Forum Code of Practice are available from us, or please see the Code of Practice on the STF website.
