Florence

FLORENCE

Florence is celebrated as the most beautiful city in Italy, with its narrow winding streets and the cityscape dominated by Brunelleschi's Duomo. It was Florence's artists and thinkers who set the wheels of the Renaissance in motion. The galleries, museums and churches here plot the advance of the Renaissance stage by stage and its legacy is felt throughout the city.
It is possible to combine a visit to Florence with both Rome and Padua to trace the development of the Renaissance within Italy.

  • Accademia
Europe's first school of drawing and now home to Michelangelo's David.
  • Bargello Museum
The National museum, housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city and containing a wonderful collection of Renaissance sculpture.
  • Duomo
One of the largest churches in Europe, with Brunelleschi's majestic dome which has a span of more than forty metres with its base more than fifty metres above the floor.
  • Santa Croce
    Works by Donatello and Giotto.
  • Santa Maria del Carmine
    Works by Masaccio and Lippi.
  • Santa Maria Novella
Works by Masaccio, Lippi, Ghirlandaio and Brunelleschi.
  • Uffizi Gallery
Probably the greatest gallery in all Italy, no amount of time would be sufficient to do it justice.
