Groeninge Museum

BELGIUM

A tour to the Belgian cities would enable you to focus on the Dutch and Flemish Masters although you are able to visit many fine museums which display a far broader span of work. It is also possible to combine these destinations with time in Amsterdam to visit any number of museums and galleries.

Antwerp

  • Middelheim Museum - an open air museum of sculptures.
  • Royal Museum of Fine Arts - a magnificent collection ranging from van Eyck to the present day. The focal point is the work of the Antwerp masters of the seventeenth century: Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck.
  • Rubenshuis - where the artist lived and worked.

Bruges

  • Groeninge Museum - has a fine collection of Flemish Primitives.

Brussels

  • Magritte Museum - A new museum, opened in June 2009.
  • Museum of Ancient Art - A vast collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th to the 18th century.
  • Museum of Modern Art - A continuation from the Museum of Ancient Art, (together they make up the Royal Museum of Fine Arts), this houses works of art from the end of the 18th century to the modern period.

Ghent

  • Museum of Fine Arts - The permanent collection here has more than 300 works, from Bosch to Expressionism.
  • St Bavo's Cathedral - Home of the Van Eyck masterpiece, "The Mystic Lamb".
